The Vörösmarty tér ( German Vörösmarty Square ), located in the center of Pest , in the V district and named after the Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty , is one of the busiest squares in the Hungarian capital Budapest , but it is completely closed to traffic. This is where the famous Váci utca and the "Millennium Line" of the Budapest Metro, built in 1896, end .

Before it was named after the Hungarian national poet in 1926, the square, which was first recorded in the city maps in 1812 as the theater square (Theátrom piatcza) , was called Giselaplatz (Gizella tér) after Gisela von Austria , the daughter of , since 1874 (with an interruption after the First World War ) Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth .

The center of the square is dominated by the Mihály Vörösmartys monument ; It is limited as far as possible by former trading post buildings , which today mostly house offices, shops and cafes. An architectural counterpoint on the western side is an office building built in glass construction, which houses international fashion chains on the ground floor. The east side of Vörösmarty Square is adorned by the skeleton building of the former luxury department store. There are mainly boutiques and other shops. To the north is the famous Gerbeaud café .

Vorosmarty monument

The monument in honor of Mihály Vörösmarty, erected in the middle of Vörösmarty Square, was erected in 1908 from Carrara marble by the sculptors Eduard Kallós and Eduard "Ede" Telcs . Vörösmarty, who is sitting in a throne-like armchair, is surrounded by trees. The Hungarian people at their feet represent people at different stages of life. The marble plinth of the monument is adorned with the first verse from Vörösmarty's masterpiece Szózat : Hazádnak rendületlenül légy híve, ó magyar (“From love and faithfulness to the fatherland, Hungarian, always filled”). Right below the line of verse is a small black spot. It is said that it was a fortune forint that a beggar donated to build the monument.
