The Sv12 series is a Finnish diesel locomotive for general-purpose operation. With 192 units built, it is the second largest series in the history of the operator VR-Yhtymä , the former Finnish state railway, after the Dm7 multiple unit series with 197 units .
Technical specifications
Technically, the series is related to the DB series V 100.2 , the bogies correspond to those of the V-160 family. It has a multi-step transmission with two gears, the T gear (85 km / h top speed) for freight traffic and the M gear (125 km / h top speed) for passenger train traffic.
The first series were delivered with screw couplings. Since the 1980s these have been replaced by SA3 couplings.
192 units were built between 1964 and 1984. Locomotives with even numbers were built by Valmet Oy in Tampere , locomotives with odd numbers were made by the locomotive manufacturer Rauma-Repola Oy. The production took place in different years and quantities:

VR series Sr12
48 locomotives were built between 1965 and 1968 and twelve more locomotives of a somewhat heavier variant of the Sv12 were built between 1971 and 1972 . These locomotives, known as the Sr12 series , were integrated into the Dv12 series with the change in the series system in 1976 .
VR series Dv12
On January 1, 1976, there was a change in the Finnish series system. In the course of this change, the series was now referred to as the VR series Dv12 .
VR series Sv1
The Dv12 2501 was converted into an electric locomotive in the Hyvinkää workshop between 1978 and 1980 and was given the series designation Sv1 with the road number 3201. The locomotive was first used in freight traffic and later with passenger trains between Helsinki and Imatra. In addition, the locomotive received an electric brake, the drive power increased to 1500 HP. In order to accommodate the components for the electric drive, the motor cover had to be enlarged.
The Sv1 was used for testing brushless three-phase drive motors. The results were incorporated into the development of the Dr16 series . The electrical components were supplied by Strömberg, who later participated in the Dr16 project. The locomotive was painted yellow with black stripes. Another short-lived prototype received this color scheme with the Dr15.
After four years of test operation, the Sv1 was equipped with a diesel engine again and was given the original company number.
Use and whereabouts
The locomotives of the Dv12 series are mainly used in shunting services. In addition, they haul passenger and freight trains on non-electrified routes. The machines often run in double or triple traction . The first locomotives of the series were shut down in 2009 due to the decline in traffic.
