Valerianus (Decurio)
Valerianus was a Roman decurion .
During the Jewish War he served under the general Vespasian , from whom he was sent to the city of Tiberias as a negotiator with a unit of 50 horsemen . When he reached the city wall, he dismounted to express his peaceful intentions. Before he could deliver Vespasian's message, the group was attacked by a horde of armed Jews, led by a certain Jesus, one of the rebels, so that the Roman horsemen had no choice but to flee to the camp on foot. The horses were led into the city in triumph and viewed as a sign of victory, although, as Flavius Josephus writes, they were only the prey of a robbery. A delegation from the citizens of Tiberia then called on Vespasian and successfully asked for mercy for the city.
