Valerianus (saint)

Valerianus († 178 in Tournus ) was a Christian martyr and saint .

According to tradition, Valerianus came from Lugdunum ( Lyon ). The persecution of Christians in 177, but he was able to share with Marcellus escape by fleeing. While Marcellus finally came to the area of ​​Cabillonum (Chalon-sur-Saône), Valerianus came to Castrum Tinurtium ( Tournus ). When he began to spread Christianity through preaching here, too, he was arrested and was martyred by beheading. After the French King Charles the Bald bequeathed this monastery, its estates and the city of Tournus to the Benedictine monks who had to flee from the island of Noirmoutier ( Département Vendée ) in 875, they built a church and a monastery over his grave. The monks brought the relics of St. Philibert, after whom this church and abbey is named.

The commemoration day of Valerian is September 15th and that of Marcellus is September 4th.
