The Vanšu Bridge ( Latvian Vanšu tilts , former name: Gorki Bridge , after Maxim Gorki ) is a cable-stayed bridge in Riga , the capital of Latvia . The structure was opened during the Soviet era on July 17, 1981 and at that time it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in Europe at 625 meters.
The Vanšu-bridge spans as one of a total of five bridges the northern part of Düna (Daugava). Due to its 109 meter high pylon , it is one of Riga's most striking landmarks . It connects Valdemāra Street with Kalnciema Street.
