The Van Phong Port is a deep water and transshipment port under construction north of Nha Trang in Vietnam .

geography

The Van Phong Bay (Vịnh Vân Phong) has a natural water depth of 22 to 27 meters and is protected from swell and swell by the Hòn Gốm peninsula . No other bay along the Vietnamese coast has similarly good conditions for a deep-water port.

history

With the first construction phase, which began on October 31, 2009, two piers were to be built for handling container ships up to 9,000 TEU and a draft of up to 16.5 meters. In two further expansion phases, facilities for accommodating container ships with 17,000 TEU and more were planned. However, due to problems with the pile foundation , construction work was stopped in May 2011 and it is currently unknown when and to what extent it will resume.

Goods and transport

When completed, Van Phong Port could become Vietnam's leading international seaport. Due to its immediate location along the main shipping lane in the South China Sea, it would be able to close the gap between the transshipment ports of Singapore and Hong Kong .
