The cemetery in the Lower Saxon town of Varel ( district of Friesland ) dates from the middle of the 19th century and is now a recreational area for many visitors.

Until about 1600, burials took place on the church hill directly at the castle church . Then the old cemetery was opened on what is now Hindenburgstrasse; the last burial took place there in 1899. Today's cemetery on Oldenburger Strasse has been a central place of remembrance since June 30, 1857. Numerous gravestones from the old cemetery, some from the 17th century, can be found there. With its old stock of native and exotic trees, the Vareler Friedhof is a unique botanical garden .

After the old cemetery on Hindenburgstrasse was closed, some gravestones and slabs from the period between 1637 and 1857 were put up again on the site on Oldenburger Strasse. The names of many well-known Varel families can be found on it. Due to its age, the cemetery in Varel is a habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants. Therefore, under the name “Lebendiger Friedhof”, a project by NABU Oldenburg is taking place here in order to preserve and maintain it.
