Varniai (Polish Wornie , German Medeniken , Schemaitisch Varnē ) is a town in the Rajongemeinde Telšiai , 33 km south of Telšiai , on the Varnelė , on the KK160 trunk road , in the Varniai Regional Park . It is the center of Varniai County . There is the Motiejus Valančius Grammar School with 540 students, the Telšiai Vocational Training Center, a library (since 1938) and a post office (LT-88050).
history
Bishop Motiejus Valančius lived here from 1850 to 1864 . Varniai Church, built in 1691, is the oldest church in Lower Lithuania . There was a seminary here . An international blues festival Bliuzo naktys (Eng. 'Blues nights') has been taking place here on Lake Lūkstas since 1993 .
