The Vavilov is a seamount in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea between the Italian mainland and Sardinia. The extinct volcano rises 2,840 meters above the sea floor, but at the point closest to the surface is still 739 meters below sea level.

The mountain, which covers an area of ​​32 by 17 kilometers, was discovered in 1959 by VP Goncharov on board the research vessel Akademik Vavilov . Later he was examined by the research submarines Zvuk , MIR and Siana , which also made film recordings.

Vavilov's western flank is steeper than the eastern. The slopes are criss-crossed by ditches, the plateaus in between formed from flowing lava . Investigations of the rock and the magnetic field showed that the volcano was extinct and was already under water in its active time. The lower part up to an elevation of about 1500 meters consists of heavy basalt, while the part over 1500 meters elevation is mainly made of lighter basaltoid. The rock here is around 400,000 to 100,000 years old.

The sea basin in which it stands is named after the undersea volcano, the Vavilov Basin, which is the second deep-sea basin in the sea alongside the Marsili Basin . It originated between five and two million years ago when the Tyrrhenian Sea opened. It probably consists of pure ocean crust . The crust itself is only about ten kilometers thick here.
