The Mürz surrounds the Veitschtal in a north, east and south direction. The Veitschtal has a Slavic name origin, as do the villages of Aflenz, Mürz, Feistritz, Massing, Pretal, Rantsch etc.

It was probably already settled by Celtic tribes until about the time of the migrations around 600 the Slavs , displaced by the Avars, penetrated the side valleys of the Mürz Valley from the east. Around the year 1000 it was settled from the Bavarian area also in the higher elevations.

The Veitsch valley is traversed by the Veitsch , the main town is Veitsch , where the valley splits into the western Großveitsch valley and the eastern Kleinveitsch valley.
