The Association of Psychological Psychotherapists (VPP) is one of the associations that represent the professional interests of psychological psychotherapists . The VPP is a dependent subdivision of the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP).

organization

The VPP is headed by a six-member federal executive board and is organized in 12 regional professional associations. The VPP has been represented in these professional bodies since the establishment of the state and federal chambers of psychotherapists (between 2001 and 2003).

Of the 27,000 licensed psychotherapists who are compulsory members of the state chambers of psychotherapists, 18,000 psychological psychotherapists are approved or authorized as members of the associations of statutory health insurance physicians. Half of them, around 9,000, are members of the BDP.

tasks

The VPP sees three main tasks

  • Representation of qualified psychologists who are completing or have completed training as psychological psychotherapists;
  • Promotion of psychology as a basic science for a variety of methods in psychotherapy;
  • Strengthening the identity of psychological psychotherapists based on psychological thinking and acting in the health care system and in the public image.

history

The VPP was founded in 1993 as one of 11 work areas in the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP). The VPP was founded at a time when there was no legal license to practice psychotherapists in Germany. Settlement via health insurance was basically reserved for medical psychotherapists. The only exception was the Techniker-Krankenkasse procedure ("TK stamp"), where direct billing was possible beforehand. In the run-up to the drafting of the Psychotherapists Act , a very intensive professional commitment to safeguard the professional activity of psychological psychotherapists was necessary. Psychological psychotherapy mainly took place in the delegation process, i. H. a doctor was responsible and settled the accounts with the fund (against a corresponding share of the income). Since the BdP is a general professional association of all psychologists (who are active in many other areas), but the commitment to the Psychotherapists Act tied up a lot of resources, the VPP was founded as a section and specific specialist representation. In addition, the aim was to ensure that a sufficiently specialized and qualified professional association existed that was competitive with other interest groups both before the law was drafted and that can continue to represent the specific interests of psychological psychotherapists well afterwards.
