The Verband der Krankenhausdirektoren Deutschlands eV ( VKD for short ) was founded on July 5, 1903 in Dresden under the name “Association of Administrative Boards of Hospitals in Germany”. Its members are mainly senior staff in hospital administration . The association's task is to publicly represent the interests of its members and hospitals and to support them in performing their duties.

The association works with the European Association of Hospital Directors (EVKD) and other international institutions.

History of the association

The development of the poor hospital, which used to rely on mild gifts, to become a hospital and a health center of our day spans a wide range from the selfless charitable / diaconal care for the sick to the "administrative object" hospital to the hospital as a commercial enterprise.

Before this change horizon, the desire and necessity arose inevitably to maintain contacts with specialists from other hospitals and to make their experience usable for our own hospital operations. Discussion groups were formed as early as the 1890s. On July 5, 1903, 18 senior administrative officials from hospitals in what was then Reich territory founded the “Association of Administrative Boards of Hospitals in Germany” in the new Dresden-Johannstadt City Hospital . At that time administrative managers but also cities, districts and corporations under public law were members of the association. This association developed into a comprehensive organization of the German hospitals, which was dedicated to the operational and personnel issues of the hospitals and the further and advanced training of the employees in the hospitals.

A committee was set up at the founding meeting with the task of preparing and carrying out company comparisons for hospitals. A first comprehensive comparison of the operating results of large hospitals could already be published in the first edition of its own specialist journal, the “Zeitschrift für Krankenanstalten” on January 5, 1905. The trade journal became the decisive link between the hospitals in the Reich. At the regular get-togethers, especially the annual meetings, topics were dealt with which promoted improvements in the operational processes in the hospital.

At the beginning of 1943 the professional association lost its organizational independence through the ordered incorporation into the German Hospital Society. It was called: "German Hospital Society - Professional Association of Administrative Directors of Hospitals, Sanatoriums and Nursing Institutions". The independent association work, which was interrupted by the Second World War, was resumed in West Germany soon after 1945 and in 1952 led to the restructuring and renaming of the "Fachvereinigung der Verwaltungsleiter deutscher Krankenanstalten e. V. ".

In 1989 the general assembly changed its name again to “Association of Hospital Directors Germany e. V. (VKD) ”. After the Second World War, there was no corresponding independent association in eastern Germany. Rather, the economic directors and administrative managers were members of the hospital society, which encompasses all professional groups.

After the opening of the borders in Germany and Europe, the "Association of Hospital Administration Managers in the GDR" was established in what was then the GDR on April 5, 1990, but after a few months it was joined by its members in July 1990 of the hospital directors of Germany e. V. dissolved again. This means that the association now covers the area of united Germany.

Within the association, entrepreneurial management and action in the hospital is conveyed through a comprehensive exchange of experience as well as through events for further and advanced training.

organization structure

According to the statutes, the association's organs are the general assembly, the board of directors, the executive committee and the president. In 1992, the board of directors appointed a managing director who continues to manage the business on the basis of the association's resolutions to this day. The office has been located at the association's headquarters in Berlin since 2001 . The association has regional groups whose structure is determined by the general assembly (13 regional groups, as of 1/2009). To promote cooperation and for specific questions from members with the same subject-specific interests, the board has formed the specialist groups for rehabilitation, care facilities and psychiatry. The technical committees for fundamental questions and for business administration were formed by the board of directors.

Positions, tasks and goals

The hospital is committed to the dignity of the sick. It is his task to take into account the scientific knowledge and the technical progress, to preserve the humanity for the patient and to secure the profitability with high quality services. The members of the Association of Hospital Directors in Germany take the position that, even in times of scarce financial resources, cost efficiency and profitability must not contradict high ethical standards and outstanding quality. The changed age group pyramid poses a challenge to medical progress and ethics.

The professionalization of management as a prerequisite for the use of all the advantages of networking and cooperation is seen as a way into the future of a health economy that can secure growth and jobs as the engine of an efficient economic and employment policy.

The association therefore supports its members in their management tasks in hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation clinics, organizes a wide range of further and advanced training events at the state and federal level and promotes the exchange of experience. He actively shapes the framework conditions for health policy and patient care on a high ethical and medical-nursing level.
