history

During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, Dundee developed into one of the most important locations for the textile industry in the United Kingdom . At the wedding in the late 19th century, around 60 textile mills were in operation there, employing more than 50,000 people. Around two thirds of the workers were women.

The Verdant Works were founded in 1833 by David Lindsay . The location was expanded several times over the course of the century. Later, Ewan & Young and then Alexander Thomson acquired the company. In 1864 the Verdant Works employed 500 people. In terms of size, the company was ranked 16th among the textile mills in Dundee. In 1889 the production of flax fiber was stopped. Starting in 1893, Alexander Thomson & Sons switched the Verdant Works to processing waste from jute production , which was used, for example, to fill mattresses.

In 1996 a museum was opened in the buildings of the now abandoned textile mill. It deals with the historically significant processing of jute and flax fiber in Dundee. In 2016, more museum rooms were opened in the High Mill .
