The Medal of Merit for Civil Protection ( fin : Väestönsuojelun ansiomitali ) is a Finnish medal of honor , donated on October 25, 1940 by statutory order of the President Risto Ryti and in recognition of work done in times of peace or war for the benefit of civil protection. The first award took place by order of the day No. 129 / November 8, 1940 of the Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Armed Forces. The Medal of Merit will be awarded well into the 21st century.

The medal consists of two levels and can be awarded with or without a ribbon.

  • I. grade in silver
  • II. Stage in bronze

With a clasp in times of war, without a clasp in times of peace. The medal without a clasp could also be awarded to foreigners.

Appearance

Carrying method

The medal is worn on the left side of the chest of the recipient. The black ribbon is 32 mm wide. In its center, two 6 mm wide yellow central stripes were woven in, which are 6 mm apart. The clasp is silver, 19 mm wide and 5 mm high. The year of the award is engraved in the middle.

Award terms

The first class is awarded and is awarded for special services to civil protection work. The second class medal, on the other hand, has a patina and is awarded to deserving individuals. The medal can also be awarded posthumously if the entrusted has lost his life in the performance of civil protection work. In this case the medal becomes

  • a) the wife or
  • b) the oldest child, father or mother
