The Merit Medal for Rescue from Danger was donated on January 17, 1848 by Paul Friedrich August von Oldenburg for people who, at risk of their own lives, contributed to the rescue of the property of others or who, through extraordinary efforts, contributed to such rescues.

The medal is a round medal made of silver and shows the image of the reigning Grand Duke on the obverse . All around PAUL FRIEDR. AUG GR.H V. OLDENBURG. On the back the inscription FOR RESCUE FROM DANGER can be read. This is surrounded by an oak wreath.

The award was worn on a dark blue ribbon with narrow red stripes on the left side of the chest.
