Honored seaman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The honorary title of Merited Seaman was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of a medal. The title was donated on July 1, 1965. It was bestowed on all employees in the maritime transport industry and, from 1968 onwards, also on workers in deep-sea fishing. The prerequisites for this were excellent performance and many years of meritorious work in this area. The maximum number of awards was limited to 16 honorary degrees per year and was always awarded on October 13 of each year, the day of the shipping industry, usually by the Minister of Transport.

Appearance

The gold-plated bronze medal with a diameter of 31.5 mm shows an anchor in the center of its obverse , which takes up almost the entire space of the medal. The anchor is surrounded at the top by the semicircular inscription: MERIT SAILOR and at the bottom by two laurel branches. The reverse of the medal shows the GDR's national coat of arms.

Carrying method

The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a 25 × 12 mm blue-covered medal ribbon, which is crossed horizontally by a 7 mm wide red central stripe. On the interim clasp there is also a miniature of the front of the medal with a diameter of 10 mm.
