The honorary title of Honored Veterinarian of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of an order and was the successor to the title of Honored Veterinarian (founded on November 27, 1952) since May 25, 1976 . With these titles veterinarians could be honored who could demonstrate outstanding achievements in the construction of the socialist society, in the development of the veterinary system or in international cooperation in the veterinary field. The number of awards was limited to ten entrusted persons per year.

The silver medal with a diameter of approx. 34.5 mm shows on its obverse two ears of wheat that are curved upwards in a circle. The hammer rests in the middle, which is interrupted by the two-line inscription: MERIT / VETERINARY . The lapel shows the embossed dove of peace (Picasso dove) in the middle , underneath the indented year: 1956 . The medal was worn on an eyelet, to which in turn a clasp is attached, which is 27 × 14 mm in size and is enamelled diagonally from bottom left to top right in the colors black, red and gold.

The silver medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows on its obverse two ears that are curved upwards in a circle. The veterinary snake meanders in the middle, interrupted by the two-line inscription: MERIT / VETERINARY . The reverse shows the embossed state coat of arms of the GDR in the middle, which is framed by the inscription: GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC . The medal was worn on a 25 × 14 mm large green cloth-covered clasp, which shows a miniature of the front of the medal in its center, on the upper left chest of the recipient.
