The process mechanic for spectacle optics has been a state-recognized training occupation in Germany according to the Vocational Training Act since 2002 .

Duration of training and structure

The training period to become a process mechanic for spectacle optics is usually three years. The training takes place at the training company and vocational school .

History of origin

The occupation is based on the training regulations for the eyeglass optics grinder from 1937. Technological progress, in particular the manufacture of plastic eyeglass lenses, was not included in this job description. By changing the job title to "Process mechanic for ..." it should still be clear that the glasses are increasingly being manufactured automatically.

Work areas

Process mechanics for spectacle optics produce high-quality spectacle lenses from glass and plastic. You work closely with opticians and ensure that the requirements of the Medical Devices Act (MPG) are met. The lenses are manufactured on semi-automatic and fully automatic machines that are controlled and monitored by the process mechanics. The products are then comprehensively measured, checked and checked. They also refine and clean optical surfaces.

In Germany there are two vocational schools for this apprenticeship:

  • Havelland Upper School Center in Rathenow .
