Constitution of Peru

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The current constitution of the Republic of Peru dates back to 1993. It was drawn up by the so-called “democratic constitutional congress” after the “self-coup” by President Alberto Fujimori , ratified in a referendum and put into effect on January 1, 1994. It is the 11th Peruvian constitution and provides for a presidential system of government with a parliamentary chamber. The previous Peruvian constitution dates from 1979. In 2001, President Alejandro Toledo promulgated a law that officially removed Alberto Fujimori's signature from the constitution. Although Fujimori and his followers played a leading role in the drafting, the Fujimori regime regularly violated its own constitution.
