Constitutional Remembrance Day

The Kenpō Kinenbi ( Japanese. 憲法 記念 日 ), the Constitutional Remembrance Day in Japan , is a national public holiday on May 3rd. This makes it part of Golden Week , Japan's most important holiday season for many employees, besides the New Year.

The day commemorates the entry into force of the current constitution on May 3, 1947 and was written into the public holiday law in 1948 (full title kokumin no shukujitsu ni kan suru hōritsu ). November 3rd, on which the constitution was promulgated in 1946, at the same time the Meiji Emperor's birthday, which had long been a public holiday and which some politicians had aimed for as a constitutional commemoration day, also became a public holiday as Bunka no Hi ("Day of Culture").
