The Rostock traffic garden - today Rostock traffic and leisure garden (also Rostock youth traffic school ) - is located in the Barnstorfer Forest and is a practice area where children can learn to ride a bicycle in a traffic-friendly manner.

Definition of terms

The area of the youth traffic school is called the traffic and leisure garden, i.e. only the paths and traffic signs . Both the buildings erected later and the buildings in connection with the traffic garden are referred to as youth traffic school.

history

On 7 November 1957, the then still "Pioneer Garden" was called Verkehrsgarten inaugurated. At that time there were no buildings on the site, these were added later. In small gasoline-powered vehicles produced by the Neptun shipyard , the young pioneers learned how to behave in road traffic, but also how to interact and some of the mechanical principles of automobiles.

The traffic and leisure garden today

All fourth graders from Rostock schools learn to ride a safe bicycle in the youth traffic school . Before the children come to the Barnstorfer Wald for practical training, there are two lessons in the school on the program, which are dealt with by police staff . If the children have the theoretical foundations, they can go to the traffic garden to practice. The classes (max. 2 per day) are there on two (mostly consecutive) days.

On the first day there are two exercises that are first explored on foot to give the children the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the peculiarities of the route and to ask questions. Afterwards, the exercises are ridden with the traffic garden's own bicycles.

The second day starts with an exercise, followed by an exam in which what has been learned is applied. The focus is on: right before left, roundabout , the correct approach on the road, pedestrian crossings, construction sites (road constrictions) and stop signs. Each child must drive the test separately so that they cannot be copied from the person in front. Depending on the points of failure, there is a green, yellow or red certificate at the end of the second day.

Today the youth traffic school is run by the Hanseatic Further Education and Employment Association Rostock gGmbH. It is mainly one-euro jobbers (MAE workers) who work here. For each of them there is a briefing at the beginning of the activity and regular training for police officers.

Outside of school hours

During the holidays, the youth traffic school offers a wide range of activities for children. Birthdays can be celebrated there, there are also treasure hunts, pirate festivals and teaching opportunities on the subject of bicycles. The age of the children does not matter.
