Transfiguration Cathedral (Zhytomyr)
The Transfiguration ( Ukr. Спасо-Преображенський собор ) in the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr is a church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate and an architectural monument of the 19th century.
history
The church was built on the site of St. Basil's Church, which was destroyed in 1771, in the years 1866–1874 according to plans by the architect K. Rachau in the Russian-Byzantine style with typical details for the old Russian architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries. The bell tower, in which a main bell weighing over 200 kg hangs, is 53 meters high.
Since the construction work turned out to be difficult, specialists took part in it, who built Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg between 1818 and 1858 .
Furnishing
The church was built of brick in the Russian-Byzantine style. It is cruciform and has five tent-like domes. A rectangular bell tower adjoins the west facade.
The main idea behind the artistic decoration of the church was to highlight the natural resources of Volhynia ; they used granite and labradorite from the region of Zhytomyr. The church also has numerous oil murals from the 19th century.
The iconostasis of the church bears icons of the Russian academic Mikhail Vasilyev .
