Historical view of the cathedral in the 19th century

Tsarina Catherine the Great , the founder of Odessa, ordered the building of the church, which should be dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ . It started in 1795 but came to a standstill for a few years under Katharina's son Paul . Under Governor Vorontsovconstruction work was resumed and swiftly continued. The bell tower was built according to designs by the Italian builders Giuseppe and Gian Torricelli. In 1827 the church was finished, initially with a free-standing bell tower. In the course of the 19th century there were significant alterations and extensions, the bell tower was incorporated into the building, and the church was expanded into one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals with a capacity of 9,000 people.

After the establishment of the Soviet regime, the cathedral was looted in 1919 and closed in 1932. In 1936 Josef Stalin ordered its destruction: it was blown up during the night. Already during the Romanian rule in Odessa during the Second World War , there were considerations to rebuild the Transfiguration Cathedral. It began in 1999, and on July 21, 2010 the new building was consecrated by the Russian Patriarch Kyrill I.

The Transfiguration Cathedral is one of the most famous examples of the so-called rebirth of religious buildings after planned destruction and decades of Soviet rule.
