Verneuk Pan

Verneuk Pan (also Verneukpan ) is a salt pan in the South African province of North Cape , which was created by the natural drying out of a lake. The area is about 50 kilometers long and eleven kilometers wide. The next bigger place is Brandvlei . The name of the salt pan derived from the Afrikaans -word Verneuk for "deception" and refers to the local mirages . The area became famous when British racing driver Malcolm Campbell tried in vain to break the land speed record there in 1929 .

The area is suitable for hang gliding .
