Brandvlei is a small town in the municipality of Hantam , Namakwa District , Northern Cape Province in the Republic of South Africa . It is 120 kilometers from Loeriesfontein at the intersection of the R27 and R357 roads. In 2011 it had 2,859 one-week days.
The city is named after a Voortrekker with the surname Brand. He camped here at the Sakrivier, a dry river that only carries water after heavy rainfall. Vlei means "swamp" in Afrikaans , a misleading name as there is rarely water here. Today's dry semi-desert landscape around the city was subtropical during the Miocene ; many fossil finds prove this.
Attractions
There are several salt pans in the area around Brandvlei . The best known is the Verneukpan northeast of the city. This salt pan became known in 1929 through the world record attempts of the multiple speed record holder Malcolm Campbell .
