Hantam ( English Hantam Local Municipality , formerly Calvinia ) is a local community in the Namakwa district of the South African province of Northern Cape . The seat of the municipal administration is in Calvinia . Mayor is Roger Nieldo Swartz (ANC).

The community name is the Khoi word for "mountains where the onions grow". It was named after the Hantam Mountains .

In 2011 the community had 21,578 inhabitants. 82.2% of these were colored , 12.1% white and 4.4% black. 93.1% Afrikaans, 1% English and 0.6% isiXhosa were spoken .

Attractions

The Hantam National Botanical Garden is located near Nieuwoudtville .
