Nieuwoudtville is a place in the municipality of Hantam , Namakwa District , Northern Cape Province in South Africa . Cape Town is 350 kilometers south. In 2011 there were 2,093 residents here.
The place is around 1,000 meters above sea level on the Bokveld (Bokkeveld) plateau . The approach from the west is via the VanRhyns Pass and offers a view over the Namaqualand and the Knersvlakte .
The place is nicknamed the "Bulb Capital of the World" (flower bulb capital of the world). It is assumed that the world's largest concentration of different tubers / bulbous plants occurs here. These geophytes start to bloom in March / April after the first summer rains. The flowering period then runs through October, with a peak in July. Nieuwoudtville has a special geographical location: from here four different vegetation zones are only 25 kilometers away: Karoo , Bushmanland, Knersvlakte and Namaqualand .
history
It was founded in 1897 on the Groenrivier farm (German: "Green River"). The area was also known as Groene Rivier , Bokkeveld, and Onder Bokkeveld . The place is named after the Nieuwoudt family, who owned the land until it was sold to the Dutch Reformed Church in 1897 .
