|
Loeriesfontein is a small town in the municipality of Hantam , Namakwa District , Northern Cape Province in South Africa . in 2011 it had 2,744 inhabitants. It is located 65 kilometers northeast of Nieuwoudtville at the intersection of the R355 and R357 roads. Loeriesfontein is 960 meters above sea level.
Loeriesfontein is Afrikaans for "Loeries Quelle". The origin of the name is unclear, either the city was named after the bird Loerie ( Turacu corythaix ) or alternatively after a Jewish traveling salesman with the surname Luri .
history
The town developed around a corner shop from 1894 onwards, founded by Fredrick Turner, a nephew of Charles Spurgeon . The shop still exists today and is run by a descendant of the founder.
Attractions
As in all of Namaqualand , one of the main attractions is the desert bloom, which takes place annually between late August and early September. Provided that the temperatures and rain are appropriate, within a few days the apparently lifeless desert soil will develop into a millionfold splendor of flowers. Around 4,000 plant species are known from this region.
Quiver trees
On the road between Nieuwoudtville and Louriesfontein there are large populations of quiver trees ( Aloe dichotoma ).
Fred Turner Local History Museum

Outside the flowering season in spring, the museum is only open by prior arrangement.
Windmill Museum
Here 27 windmills from the region have been collected, restored and set up to work.
