Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (born June 19, 1834 in Kelvedon ( Essex , England ), † January 31, 1892 in Menton , France ) was an English Baptist pastor . He is considered one of the most famous preachers of the 19th century.

Life

Spurgeon's parents were members of a free church . Spurgeon received the decisive impetus to turn to the Christian faith when he was 15 in a Methodist congregation in Colchester . Through his intensive reading the Bible , he came to the conclusion that after the New Testament , the baptism of the personal faith not go ahead, but that she must follow faith. He therefore felt that his baptism as a child was inadequate and was baptized on May 3, 1850 in a Baptist church . A year later he was called to be a Baptist pastor. In 1854 he took up a position as a preacher in London . Seven years later, his congregation, New Park Street Baptist Church, had grown so much that a new church, the Metropolitan Tabernacle , had to be built with over 5,000 seats. His sermons were written in shorthand , sold weekly, and later translated into many languages. From 1855, his sermons were distributed worldwide in magazines , tracts and books. New Spurgeon sermons appeared weekly. In 1856, Spurgeon began systematically training pastors at the Pastors' College he founded . From 1866 to 1879 he built the Stockwell Orphanage , a care facility for orphans .

On January 8, 1856, Spurgeon married Susannah, daughter of Robert Thompson. The marriage resulted in two sons, the twins Charles and Thomas, born on September 20, 1856.

His age confession read: “My whole theology has shrunk to four words: Jesus died for me!” Although he was a missionary through and through , he stuck to the Calvinist doctrine of predestination . He also believed that the entire Bible was verbally inspired .

Of his numerous writings, the following deserve special mention:

  • David's Treasury . Psalm commentary in 7 volumes (German 1894)
  • The Art of Illustration (German 1905)
  • Jewels of divine promises - a devotional booklet for everyday use

In Germany , too, Spurgeon's influence on ecclesiastical and free church circles is lasting; his sermons, devotions, and biblical commentaries are popular tools for home and lay preaching, and for the homiletic training of future pastors.

There was a close connection between Spurgeon and the founder of the German Baptist congregation, Johann Gerhard Oncken . For many decades, Spurgeon's sermons and writings appeared in the publishing house founded by Oncken, today's Oncken-Verlag .

On the occasion of the popular preacher's 175th birthday, the life of Spurgeon was filmed as a docudrama. The production was a joint project of the British Christian Television Association , the Christian History Institute (USA) and the media broadcaster ERF Medien (Germany) from Wetzlar.
