Ruth Albrecht

Ruth Albrecht (born October 2, 1954 in Sparrieshoop ) is a German Protestant theologian, hospital chaplain and church historian . She is Professor of Church History at the University of Hamburg . Her main research interests are the history of monasticism , historical research on women and gender , the piety and social history of modern times and the regional history of northern Elbe .

Live and act

School, university and doctorate

Albrecht attended the Elsa Brandström School in Elmshorn , where she passed the Abitur examination on June 6, 1973. She then studied Protestant theology in Bethel , Erlangen and Tübingen until 1979 . On July 17, 1979, she passed the first theological exam at the Erlangen faculty.

From 1980 to 1982 she was a research assistant at the Reformation History Research Center in Erlangen ( Osiander Edition), then until 1985 she was a research assistant at the Chair for History and Theology of the Christian East at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, where she supervised one of Fairy von Lilienfeld 's in 1984 Inquiry into the life of Saint Macrina for Dr. theol. received his doctorate.

Hospital chaplain

On August 1, 1998, she took over pastoral care at the Hospital of the Holy Spirit and with effect from January 15, 2002, she was assigned to the pastoral office of the Hamburg Church District Association for hospital pastoral care in St. Georg and the ethics project.

From November 1, 2011 until her retirement on June 30, 2020, she headed the newly established “Ethics in Health Care” office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church District Association in Hamburg, which was set up because hospital pastoral care was increasingly associated with ethical problems for patients, relatives and employees was and is being confronted in the clinics.

University professor

In the years after her doctorate , Albrecht shifted her research focus from the early church to church history in the early modern period .

From 1996 to 1998 she worked as a pastor on leave of absence on her habilitation thesis, for which she received a grant from the German Research Foundation.

In the summer semester of 1998 Ruth Albrecht was visiting professor for feminist theology / theological women's studies at the theological faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

In 2000 she qualified as a professor at the Theological Faculty of the University of Hamburg for the subject of church history with a study on Johanna Eleonora Petersen , a theological writer of early Pietism .

After completing her habilitation , Albrecht became a private lecturer in Hamburg.

With her research on the evangelist Adeline von Schimmelmann , Albrecht opened up another large area of ​​research: the history of the church and piety of the 19th century .

On February 25, 2008 Ruth Albrecht was awarded the title of professor according to § 17 HmbHG at the University of Hamburg.

Memberships

Ruth Albrecht has been a member of the Historical Commission for Research into Pietism since 2005 and, after having been on the Publications Committee for several years, has been a member of the Board of Directors (Executive Committee) since 2018.

In 2012, after eight years on the board, she was elected chairwoman of the Association for Schleswig-Holstein Church History.
