Destruction of the defense
Destroying the defense is a tactical motif in chess . A stone that fulfills a function is struck and its function is thus canceled. The opponent has to come to terms with the loss of the defender and either replace his position elsewhere or do without it.

In the first example position (Diagram 1) White has occupied the diagonal b1 – h7 with bishop c2 and queen d3 and is attacking h7. The knight f6 covers this mate square . With 1. Rf1xf6 White removes the defensive piece . Black has no time to take on f6 because he has to play g7 – g6 to fend off mate (Qd3xh7 #).
In the second example (Diagram 2) Black has built up an attack against White's king, but by 1. Qg4xd4 + c5xd4 2. Bg3 – e5 # White preempts Black's attack. The diagonal a1-h8 was only protected by the runner d4.
