Insurance card (Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The uniform insurance card is a credit card-sized card that has been issued to every person with health insurance in Switzerland since 2010 to store administrative and health-related information. It represents a first step towards a health card. The aim of the insurance card is to simplify billing processes (between insurers and doctors, pharmacists or hospitals), to have medical data available for emergencies, and to save costs through efficiency gains.

history

The new insurance card replaces inconsistent plastic cards issued by insurance companies that served as membership cards.

Legal basis

Federal law

On October 8, 2004, Parliament created the legal basis for the introduction of an insurance card. The corresponding Article 42a Paragraph 1 in the Health Insurance Act (KVG) has been in force since January 1, 2005 and reads:

“The federal government can stipulate that every insured person has an insurance card for the duration of his or her submission to compulsory health insurance. This contains the name of the insured person and a federal social security number "

Free Movement of Persons Agreement

The Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the EU obliged Switzerland to introduce an insurance card in its basic insurance by the beginning of 2006, which in an emergency authorizes the receipt of medical benefits in Europe and thus replaces the E111 form. The insurance card has the format of a credit card and contains purely administrative information such as surname, first name, date of birth, insurance number, insurer, card number and expiry date.

saved data

The insurance card contains the following data:

Basic data

  • Name and first name of the insured person
  • Date of birth
  • Insured person number
  • Card number
  • Expiry Date
  • Insurance number for old-age and survivors' insurance (AHV number)
  • gender

Optional data from insurers

The insurer can also electronically save the following administrative data:

  • Postal address of the insured person
  • Special forms of insurance that the insured person has taken out (e.g. HMO model );
  • Information on whether accident coverage has been suspended (i.e. whether you are also insured against accidents with health insurance or not);
  • Information on supplementary insurance if the insured person agrees to it;
  • EU health insurance card data
  • Billing address of the insurer

In addition, non-personal, administrative data is also printed and stored:

  • Name and identification number of the insurer
  • Identification number of the insurance card
  • Expiry date of the insurance card

If the insured person so wishes, medical data can also be saved on the insurance card.

Printed data

The data of the EU health insurance card can be printed on the back. These include surname, first name, a personal identification number (AHV number of the insured person) and date of birth.

Functions

  • Microchip and PUK for emergency medical data
  • Storage of the AHV number
  • Coverage query with insurers for KVG (mandatory)
