Gerhard Heinz Bachmann (born July 3, 1943 in Heilbronn ) is a German geologist.

Life

Gerhard H. Bachmann went to school in Heilbronn and from 1962 studied geology at the University of Stuttgart , where he received his diploma from Manfred Gwinner in 1968 ("On the petrology of the lower main shell limestone ( trochitic limestone ) in northern Württemberg") and received his doctorate in 1972 from Gwinner ("The carbonate components of the upper shell limestone (Middle Triassic) in southwest Germany and their diagenesis "). 1969/70 he was at the University of Liverpool with RGC Bathurst. From 1972 to 1976 he was an assistant at the Free University of Berlin with Volker Jacobshagen (where he was, among other things, doing fieldwork in Greece) before he worked for Preussag Erdöl-Erdgas in Hanover for twenty years . He was an exploration geologist there, and in 1977/78 he was also involved in what was then the deepest borehole in Germany (Vorderriss 1, Bavarian Alps, around 6,470 m). He later held managerial positions as head of exploration at the US subsidiary in Houston and from 1991 to 1993 as chief geologist. While working at Preussag, he completed his habilitation in 1979 at the Free University of Berlin and became an adjunct professor at the Free University of Berlin in 1987 and at the University of Göttingen in 1991 . In 1994 he became a full professor for regional and historical geology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , where after the fall of the Wall he was significantly involved in the rebuilding of the Institute for Geosciences and Geography and from 1996 to 1998 dean of the Geosciences Department. In 2008 he retired.

He dealt in particular with petroleum and natural gas geology, sediment geology , basin analysis (Molasse basin in Bavaria, Northwest German basin, etc.), the Triassic and Permian in Central Europe and the regional geology of Central Germany and Württemberg. In recent times he has also dealt with the geology of historical battlefields (such as that of Jena and Auerstedt and the peasant wars ). Since 1991 he has been a member of the Perm-Triassic sub-commission of the German Stratigraphic Commission.

In 1998 he organized an international symposium on the epicontinental triad , which resulted in an international series of events.
