The silencing of sounds is a technical term in phonology . It describes the process in which a sound is no longer pronounced in the course of the further development of a language . Often the sound is still written in the letter writing.

Examples of silent sounds

  • The e at the end of French words. ("France", "Simone")
  • The h sound in the transition from Attic Greek to Koine
