Treaty of Bolotowo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Treaty of Bolotowo ( Russian Болотовский договор ) was signed in 1348 between the cities of Novgorod and Pskov in northwestern Russia . He recognized Pskov's political independence from Novgorod. Up to that point, Pskov was still part of the Novgorod Republic , at least on paper , but had provided a prince of his own for a long time.

The church jurisdiction was still reserved for the Novgorod archbishop , who now got a deputy from Pskov and visited the city at regular intervals so that no citizen from Pskov had to be brought to justice in Novgorod.

backgrounds

There is speculation today about the background to the contract. The war between Sweden and Novgorod in 1347/48 is often mentioned in connection with the treaty , in which political concessions were made in return for the help from Pskov.

Another theory says that because Pskov was practically independent before, only things that had previously been decided orally were now recorded in writing.

It is noteworthy that the Novgorod Treaty is only mentioned in the Novgorod Chronicles , not in those of Pskov. Relations between the two cities have also not changed after the treaty; Therefore, today it is assumed that Novgorod only wanted to avoid an upcoming administrative reform in the city with the formal recognition of independence. The real political independence of the city was probably recognized long ago.
