Washington Treaty (1900)

The Treaty of Washington was signed on November 7, 1900 between the Kingdom of Spain and the United States in Washington, DC . It was an addition to the Treaty of Paris (1898), which ended the Spanish-American War . The treaty came into force on March 23, 1901, when it was ratified by both nations. In terms of content, the treaty specified Article III of the Paris Treaty. His text read:

“Spain renounces, in favor of the US, all claims it had or alleged to have during the signing of the Treaty of Paris in relation to the islands of the Philippines as described in Article III. This applies in particular to the islands of Cagayan Sulu and Sibutu and the associated islands. [Spain] fully agreed that these islands would be included in the cession of the archipelago [common the Philippines]. "

In return for the waiver, the USA pledged to pay $ 100,000 (the equivalent of around 3,100,000 euros today) within six months of ratification.
