Vesturkirkjan was consecrated in 1975 . Their architecture is considered to be particularly stylish and simple. It rises like a landmark over the city and its shape seems to be inspired by a ship with a sail. The tower forms the shape of a vertically halved pointed pyramid .
Opposite the church is the Viðarlundin úti í Grið park .
On Whit Monday, June 5, 2006, a monument by the sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen was erected for Sigmundur Brestisson , who initiated the Christianization of the Faroe Islands around 1000 years earlier and was murdered around 1005 in front of the church .
