The VetroSwiss entrusted a division of ATAG business organizations AG and since the end of 2014 by the FOEN (Federal Office for the Environment), the advance disposal fee for beverage packaging made of glass to collect and pay to the beneficiaries.

The company is a partner of Vetrorecycling , the glass business of Vetropack, and one of the eight companies of the Swiss Recycling association Swiss Recycling (Association of Swiss recycling organizations) supported by the Federal Office for the Environment  will be supported (FOEN). VetroSwiss is equally responsible for Liechtenstein within the framework of the customs union .

In Switzerland and Liechtenstein - similar to Austria, but in contrast to Germany for example - the organization of glass recycling is largely a non-profit, not-for-profit sector, the disposal companies and recyclers themselves (companies and organizations that transport, clean, sort or process waste glass ) basically finance their activities through cost-covering, market-oriented prices.

Please note the note on the applicable legal version.

The Ordinance on Beverage Packaging  (VGV) and the Ordinance on Advance Disposal Fee for Beverage Packaging Made of Glass  (VEG) aim to distribute the costs incurred for disposing of old glass and recycling in accordance with the originator. External costs should be internalized. The following principles of the Environmental Protection Act should be taken into account:

  • The generation of waste should be avoided as far as possible
  • Waste must be recycled as far as possible
  • Waste must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and, as far as this is possible and sensible, domestically

The company is to ensure efficient and transparent implementation of the VEG in the area of glass recycling on behalf of the federal government. Therefore, VetroSwiss, together with Vetropack , is also responsible for information campaigns and PR activities.

The advance disposal fee for beverage packaging made of glass has been since January 1, 2002 (Art. 1 VEG) per package:

a. with a filling volume of 0.09 l up to and including 0.33 l: 2  cents ;
b. with a filling volume of more than 0.33 l up to and including 0.60 l: 4 cents;
c. with a filling volume of more than 0.60 l: 6 cents.
  (these are around 1.5, 3 and just under 5  euro cents )

In Switzerland with Liechtenstein, for example, around 30 million francs VEG income is collected annually, which VetroSwiss then passes on to the disposal companies. The advanced disposal fee was first levied in 2002 and has been paid out to the disposal companies by VetroSwiss since 2003.

First and foremost, the municipalities receive compensation according to the Subsidies Act (SR 616.1), which in turn can transfer disposal and their claim for compensation to an organization (e.g. special purpose association, waste disposal company). In addition, it is also possible for VetroSwiss to support third parties who relieve the burden on waste glass disposal - especially other collectors - with financial aid in accordance with the Subsidy Act. Among other things, VetroSwiss also supports certain municipalities with the purchase of waste glass containers .

"VetroSwiss" is a suitcase word that is intended to take account of multilingualism in Switzerland.
