Vienna Bilingual Schooling
The Vienna Bilingual Schooling trial provides for bilingual training in English and German from elementary school to the final examination .
Based on the Austrian curriculum, the students are taught language skills in both languages. You will be taught by both German and English speaking teachers. Half of the VBS classes are attended by children with German and English as their mother tongue or everyday language. Previous knowledge of the second language is a prerequisite for admission to the school trial.
Participating schools
The first bilingual class was opened in September 1992 in a primary school in Vienna's 10th district . Seven elementary schools are now taking part in the school trial. In the lower secondary level there are four secondary schools, one federal high school and three secondary high schools. The four grammar schools continue the bilingual option in the upper level ( upper secondary level ). In addition, the Hetzendorfer Straße Commercial Academy also offers a bilingual program.
The number of registrations for bilingual classes far exceeds capacity. It is estimated in professional circles that twice as many children apply than can be accepted. However, the number of schools that can take part in a school trial is limited by law. Therefore, many Viennese schools have started to offer special classes that are not completely bilingual, but are based on Vienna Bilingual Schooling . This includes the GEPS classes, for example.
