The Vietnam muntjak ( Muntiacus puhoatensis ) is a hardly researched deer species from the genus of the muntjacs ( Muntiacus ). It was only discovered in Vietnam in 1997 .

features

The size of the Vietnam muntjac is not available. It is morphologically similar to the Annam muntjak ( Muntiacus truongsonensis ) and weighs between 8 and 15 kg. The body stature is small and the fur is reddish.

Distribution, habitat, way of life

The Vietnam muntjac occurs in Puhoat in the province of Nghệ An in the north-west of Vietnam and probably in neighboring Laos . The habitat are evergreen forests with a closed canopy of leaves at altitudes above 900 m. Nothing is known about his way of life.

Status and Taxonomy

The Vietnam muntjak is known to this day only from the type specimen. Due to its strong resemblance to the Annam muntjak, its species status is controversial. It is listed by the IUCN in the category of “ data deficient ” .
