Villa Rustica (Coustaty)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica von Coustay is the remains of a Roman country estate near Coustaty near the town of Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse in the Dordogne department in France .

The remains of the villa were discovered in 1817 and briefly described. Two mosaics were found and drawn. In 1882, parts of the villa were exposed during railway work. However, it was not a systematic excavation. Above all, no plan of the villa has survived. In 1962 and 1974 further finds were made during road construction work.

The descriptions show that the villa was once richly furnished. It was decorated with geometric mosaics and had columns decorated with acanthus leaves. According to the coins found, the villa was inhabited from the first to the fourth century.
