location

The ruins of Villa rustica are located in the village of Kleinstübing, which belongs to Deutschfeistritz . It is located near Stübing Castle on the grounds of the SOS Children's Village Stübing.

excavation

Since the 19th century, the remains of a larger Roman settlement with a cemetery from the 2nd to 4th centuries have been found in Kleinstübing during construction and grave work. In the course of sewer construction work in the SOS Children's Village, the remains of a so-called villa rustica were again excavated in 2003. In 2006, well-preserved building remains were found during a discovery excavation. In 2009 a protective structure was built over the excavation site of part of the villa and the masonry was preserved. Finds from the excavation are exhibited in a showroom in Stübing Castle.

description

The part of the building, which has been protected by a protective structure since 2009, was part of a large building complex. In the protective structure you can find walls from different construction phases. The oldest building had only two narrow rooms, each equipped with a hypocaust and a praefurnium . The floor was supported by a supporting structure made of brick pillars and arches. These rooms were probably part of a private bathing complex.

These rooms were abandoned , probably after a debris flow , and later built over. This assumption is reasonable because the entire settlement, like the castle itself, is built on a cone of the castle stream. At first only one wall, which probably served as a retaining wall , was built. This was followed by a building with small living rooms and without a hypocaust.
