The Villach Verkehrsgesellschaft Kowatsch GmbH is a transport company and since 2003 part of Dr. Richard .
history
The history of this traditional Villach bus company began when Franz Kovac received the permit in 1931 for the "free wage-wage trade on order by vehicle".
In 1934 he was granted the first line concessions for the routes "Villach Lind - bus station - Völkendorf" and "Warmbad and Villach - bus station - main station - Seebach - Sankt Andrä - Annenheim". In 1935 the "Villacher Verkehrsgesellschaft" was founded together with Mr. Saga, who, however, left the company in 1937.
The second World War
Like other companies, Kowatsch had to make his vehicle fleet, which had now grown to five vehicles, available to the Wehrmacht during the war. In 1945 he received only part of his vehicles back from the British occupying forces and initially lost his line rights to the railway. However, he operated as a subcontractor on the “Villach - Klagenfurt - Graz” line.
After long, tough negotiations with the city, state and the federal ministry, Franz Kowatsch was able to regain the concessions for city traffic in 1947. At the beginning of the 1959s, three line cars and a coach were in operation. In the excursion traffic, the inexpensive buses of the Villacher Verkehrsgesellschaft drove to the mountains and the Upper Adriatic, but also to Nice. The line traffic grew rapidly due to the rapid expansion of the city, the line network was constantly expanded. The gray-red Büssing buses with the Villach coat of arms shaped the cityscape of Villach.
The 1970s
In the 1970s, the fleet was gradually converted to Mercedes-Benz buses. In 1987, 20 vehicles drove a network of 66 kilometers of routes on 11 city bus routes. In addition, there was factory traffic for large companies such as Oetker, Fercher or Schmied. The redesign of parts of the city center into a pedestrian zone subsequently required a complete reorganization of the entire route network. On behalf of the city of Villach, Kowatsch now also took a - now discontinued - free city bus through the old town.
Kowatsch becomes part of Dr. Richard
In 2003, the Kowatsch company was taken over by Dr Richard, and one year later they moved to Seebacher Allee 16 together with Südburg Carinthia and a total of 40 employees.
Vehicle fleet
As a step-by-step renewal of the bus fleet, Mercedes-Benz Citaro were purchased for the first time; the low-floor buses are equipped with air conditioning and a matrix display. The positive experiences with this type subsequently also led to the use of Citaro at Albus Salzburg, Watzke and Doktor Richard.
Most recently, however, Doctor Richard ordered MAN midi low-floor buses from Kowatsch for Villach Stadtverkehr in a departure from the decades-long tradition. These are no longer manufactured by Göppel in the smallest series just to match the appearance of the normal buses, but by MAN itself as a short version of the Lion's City. As in the other Doktor Richard companies, mainly new Setra S 415 HD and S 415 GT-HD are used in occasional traffic.
