Stig Järrel , born as Stig Olsson (born February 8, 1910 in Malmberget , Sweden , † July 1, 1998 in Monte Carlo , Monaco ), was a Swedish actor in stage and film and director of two films.

Live and act

The native Stig Olsson came to Stockholm with his parents at the age of three. Järrel, as he later called himself, began to play theater while he was still in high school. The director Alf Sjöberg persuaded the young man to attend the drama school , where Järrel enrolled in 1929. In 1931 he made his stage debut at the Vasa Theater in Carl Zuckmayer's Der Hauptmann von Köpenick , then worked for four seasons at the side of the famous acting veteran Gösta Ekman and played a. a. the Güldenstern in Shakespeare's Hamlet and the Viktor Karenin in Tolstoy's The Living Corpse .

Then, in 1935, Stig Järrel made his film debut. In his oeuvre comprising over 150 film roles, Stig Järrel was seen in numerous supporting and a few leading roles. Few of these film roles were of great substance, and hardly any of these films were shown outside of Sweden. After all, he achieved international fame with the portrayal of two diabolical characters: In Sjöberg's school drama Die Hörige , Järrel, who had played an icy Nazi in the drama Excellensen immediately before , portrayed the sadistic Latin teacher, visually inspired by Heinrich Himmler , in 1944 , who all just “ Call it Caligula ”. And in Ingmar Bergman's seductive comedy The Devil's Eye , he gave a very amusing performance as the Prince of Hell, Satan himself.

Despite his intensive filmmaking, Stig Järrel remained connected to the theater over the years and played in Molière's tartuffe and comedy revues as well as in Charley's aunt's clothes . He was also seen in Chekhov plays and in Strindberg's Miss Julie and Comrades . Järrel made several guest tours to Helsinki, where he appeared at the local Swedish-language Small Theater (Lilla Teatern). In addition, he gave numerous book and poetry readings and also took part in radio programs (e.g. Tjugo frågor) as well as recording records (e.g. Spökhistorier , 1972, to the music of Hans Edler ). In 1969 the artist published his memoirs under the title Jag - en gycklare (in English: I - a juggler ). In 1980 Järrel ended his acting career, two years later he was awarded the royal medal Litteris et artibus. Stig Järrel spent his twilight years in Monaco, where he also died,
