Vimaladharmasuriya II. ( Sinhala පළමුවන විමලධර්මසූරිය , Tamil இரண்டாம் விமலதர்மசூரியன் , ruled 1687–1707; died June 4, 1707 ) was a king of Kandy and successor to Rajasingha II. During his reign, Joseph Vaz settled in Sri Lanka and began the first missionary activities of Christians.

Life

In his youth, the prince lived as a bhikkhu (Buddhist monk) for a long time . He was very peace loving by nature. At that time there were not enough Buddhist clerics in Sri Lanka to perform the higher ordinations (upasampada, full ordination).

During his reign, Vimaladharmasuriya invited 33 monks from Burma and made sure that higher ordinations were performed again.

Advance of the Dutch

The Dutch made several attempts to bring the Kingdom of Kandy under their control. This failed, but they were able to gain control of the kingdom's foreign trade.

In 1703 the commander of the Mughal empire on the Coromandel coast , Daud Khan Panni , acquired 30 to 50 war elephants from Ceylon for 10,500 "coins" with the consent of the king .
