Vincent Almendros (* 1978 in Avignon , France ) is a French writer .

life and work

Almendros studied literature at the University of Avignon and then began to write poetry and prose. He sent his first novel about the love of a private teacher for his pupil, Machère Lise , to the Belgian author Jean-Philippe Toussaint with a request for a review . Since he liked the novel, he passed it on to the director of the Les Éditions du Minuit publishing house in Paris, Irène Lindon. The novel was published there in 2011. In 2015, the same publisher published Almendros' second novel about a square story on board a sailing boat, Un été , which was published in German in 2017. His third novel, Faire Mouche , followed in 2018 and was also translated into German. Ma chère Lise was also translated into Chinese in 2017.

Typical of Almendros' way of working is the gradual condensation of the manuscripts, which were initially much larger than the published versions. The length of his last two novels is around 100 pages. Machère Lise's 160 pages could also be further reduced with less pressure. Much in his novels, which oscillate between realism and imagination, remains unsaid. The secrecy, the ambiguity help to increase the tension.
