biography

Vincenzo Tanara comes from a noble family from Bologna. After a successful military career in the service of various Signori , he was appointed magistrate in his hometown in 1624. In his spare time he was a passionate hunter.

In his later years, Vincenzo Tanara increasingly withdrew to his estate to write several pamphlets on agriculture. He was inspired by writings from the Sforza library . Tanara's writings go beyond pure subsitential cultivation and call for an agriculture that should be oriented towards market needs and profit maximization. In l'economia del cittadino in villa , his best-known and repeatedly published work, Tanara also mentions his views on the duties of a family head as well as personal recipe preferences. A section about the visit of Tanara to a representative banquet, hosted by Cardinal Antonio Barberini , provides information about the social customs of the Bolognese upper class in the 17th century in addition to the dishes served .

The city of Bologna has named a park called Parco Vincenzo Tanara in his honor .
