Vipp is the name of a trash can model and as such is the best-known product of the Danish metal goods company of the same name in Copenhagen , Denmark , which mainly produces trash cans and other household products. Production has been in Riga , Latvia , since 2016 . Morten Bo Jensen is the chief designer.

history

Holger Nielsen won a car in the lottery in 1931 . Because he didn't have a driver's license, he traded it for a metal lathe. In 1939, Holger Nielsen developed the trash can, known for its shape, for his wife's hairdressing salon. In the same year he founded the "Holger Nielsen Metalvarefabrik" in Randers with one employee. The solid rubbish bins were mainly sold to dentists, doctors and hairdressing salons.

After Holger Nielsen's death in 1992, his second daughter, social worker Jette Egelund, took over the company. In the beginning she had to keep her head above water with part-time jobs. By attending a trade fair, she was able to win countless orders and outsource production to a subcontractor. Today Vipp is run by her son Kasper Egelund. Together with his wife Sofie Christensen Egelund, he runs the US expansion. In addition to the steel rubbish bins, there were other utensils for bathroom needs, as well as kitchen and bathroom modules including fittings, lamps and shelves in 2012. In 2014 the modular Vipp Shelter, a transportable, fully equipped holiday home was launched that reflects the timeless and functional design of the pedal bin.

reception

In 2009 the Vipp pedal bin was included in the permanent exhibition at MoMA . The Danish Design Center exhibits the pedal bin as an everyday design and has dedicated an article to it. The business magazine Brand 1 reported in a special issue in 2012 about the specialization of the company Vipp and in particular the pedal bin.
