The Viru Vangla (German "Viru Prison") is a high-security detention center in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru . The prison is located in the east of the city of Jõhvi . It is overseen by the Estonian Ministry of Justice.

construction

The Viru Vangla was inaugurated on July 29, 2008 as the most modern of the five prisons in the Republic of Estonia. The construction time was almost two years. The construction costs were 1.2 billion Estonian crowns (approx. 76.7 million euros).

The Viru Vangla meets the standards of the European Union , which Estonia joined in 2004.

Prisoners

The 14 buildings of the correctional facility offer space for 1,000 prisoners and 75 outdoor prisoners. There are also 150 arrest cells of the Estonian police. Part of the prison is a juvenile detention center. The total area of ​​the complex is 16 hectares.

The prison currently employs 350 people, including just under 250 law enforcement officers. In addition to sports facilities, the Viru Vangla offers work and training opportunities for the inmates. There is also a church, rooms for social workers and training rooms.
