It offers compulsory health care insurance in accordance with the Health Insurance Act KVG, additional and property insurance in accordance with the Insurance Contract Act VVG and accident insurance under the Accident Insurance Act UVG.
The company insures private customers (individuals and families) as well as corporate customers (companies, public institutions and associations). For the latter, it offers loss of earnings and accident insurance, among other things. It also includes household items. Building, personal liability and legal expenses insurance for the portfolio.
The Visana Group comprises eight companies. Visana AG, sana24 AG, vivacare AG and Galenos AG operate the mandatory health insurance and are subject to supervision by the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). Visana Insurance Ltd operates the supplementary and accident insurance business and is subordinate to the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
Visana Services AG is the company's service company, where all employees are employed. The Visana Plus Foundation owns 100 percent of the share capital of Visana Beteiligungen AG. It also supports projects in health promotion and prevention.
history
The company emerged from the merger of the three health insurance funds KKB (founded in 1870), Grütli (founded in 1872) and Evidenzia (founded in 1990) in 1996 when the new health insurance law came into force .
In 1998, the company made headlines when it gave up basic insurance in eight cantons. In response to this, the Federal Department of Home Affairs announced that it would in future prevent “the example of Visana's withdrawal from basic insurance from setting a precedent in individual cantons.” On January 1, 2009, Visana resumed its activities as a basic insurer in all cantons and has been active throughout Switzerland ever since.
In 2006 Visana founded the two independent subsidiaries sana24 and vivacare. In autumn 2013, the three cash registers Visana, sana24 and vivacare were combined under the umbrella brand Visana. The takeover of Zürcher Versicherung Galenos took place in 2018.
